The State Meteorological Agency (AEMET), funded by the European Commission, in collaboration with the meteorological services of France (Méteo-France), Portugal (IPMA) and Belgium (RM), announces the start of the new storm-naming season with a major impact on the countries of south-western Europe.

WHAT IS A LOW-PRESSURE SYSTEM AND WHEN DOES A STORM WITH A MAJOR IMPACT GET A NAME?
A low-pressure system is a weather phenomenon that is usually associated with strong or very strong winds. The lower the minimum pressure at the centre of the depression, the stronger the winds will be. Low-pressure systems that get names are those that can have a major impact on goods and people, they do not necessarily need to experience a process of explosive cyclogenesis (a fall equal to or greater than 18-20 hPa in 24 hours at the centre of the low in our latitudes). A low-pressure system is only named when conditions are expected to result in the issuance of wind warnings (in the case of AEMET, maximum gust) of orange or red level oriented to impacts associated with such a low in one of the four countries of the Southwest Group.
